Karen has over thirty (30) years experience in analytical chemistry as well as extensive expertise in project management. She has undertaken the today-to-day management of lead isotope research projects in the fields of geochemistry, environment and human health. Karen has excellent communication skills and has successfully managed cohorts for a number of human health research projects. Karen has published extensively across all disciplines.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
  • Over thirty years laboratory experience as analytical chemist and project management, in government and commercial enterprises.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Officer at CSIRO North Ryde 1999-2002.
Macquarie Research Limited (2002)

Monitor the health and environment of children in the Sydney Metropolitan area, by determining the contribution of metal emissions from motor vehicle exhaust to the environment and young children.

Cohort Co-ordinator for the project “Metal Emissions from Petrol and the Future Health of Children”

Communicate with parents of very young children and directors of organisations who may assist in the introduction to recruit children into the study.

  • Co-ordinate regular sampling, interviews and analytical work on cohorts.
  • Supervise technical assistants who provide sample preparation and phlebotomy sampling.
  • Collate and report data to research manager.
CSIRO Exploration & Mining (1972-2002)

Perform isotopic studies using Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) as an exploration tool for the mining industry and also environmental studies whereby one may monitor and trace the pathways of lead contamination from the environment through to the human body.

Cohort co-ordinator for the “Biokinetics of Lead in Human Pregnancy” Phase III

  • Communicating with newly arrived migrants to Australia or personnel from any organisation, which may assist in the successful recruitment of migrant women to this study.
  • Co-ordinate regular sampling, medical testing, interviewing and analytical work on all project cohorts.
  • Supervise technical assistants who provide sample preparation and some analytical work.
  • Collate, plot data and report to research manager.
Clifford Love & Co. Ltd (1971-1972)

Bacteriological testing of food grade starches and consumer products. Analytical duties involving the chemical and physical testing of starch and starch products in the Plant Process Control Laboratory.

 
Unigate Dairies Pty Ltd, Wiltshire (1969-1970)

Supervised twenty-seven (27) staff and co-ordinated quality control chemical and bacteriological testing of milk and milk products from the production line of a regional dairy. Collate analytical data and report to the Manager of the dairy.

 
Colonial Sugar Refining Company Ltd (1965-1969)

Conduct routine analysis of sugar and sugar products. During 1966 assisted senior chemists in research projects- using paper and column chromatographic techniques, auto analysers and AAS techniques. From 1967 was responsible for training and supervision of junior analysts and additionally responsible for the collation and preliminary assessment of analytical results.
